Conrail's ALCS led by CSX C40-8W #7704 passes eastbound by Lorane, PA just east of Reading, PA in early April 1995. The area was once known as Exeter Station. The circa 1860's structure was built by Washington Kissinger as a hotel. The hotel was later used as a residence but had been vacant for many years. I believe there were plans to restore it, but a fire later destroyed it. The Exeter Station sat in the area just west of the hotel. This was the site of a tragic May 12, 1899 P&R collision between a special train returning from Harrisburg crashing into the rear of an express train from Williamsport, PA just before 9PM. The special carrying attendees of the unveiling of a Civil War monument honoring General John Hartranft crashed into the express, known as the Cannon Ball Express, which was stopped near the station at around 60 MPH killing 29 and injuring over 50.
