CR 7506 and 7571, along with some other local power, rests in Spring Street Yard in Reading PA in July 1984

A tale of two torpedo boats. Nicknamed torpedo geeps or torpedo boats for the rooftop mounted air tanks, Conrail 7506 and 7571 cross paths in Reading yard in July 1984. Both units were built in 12/1955 for the New York Central for passenger service. Conrail 7506 was built as NYC 5934 and Conrail 7571 was six numbers higher as NYC 5940. The 7506 carried the same number for Penn Central and received an overhaul and repaint by Conrail, but would remain classed as a GP9. It still has the steam generator vents, but unknown if it still had the generator. Conrail 7571 was PC/CR 7512 until sent to Paducah in 1978 for rebuilding including chopped nose, ox yoke central air filter housing and reclassed as a GP10. The impromptu staging came about seeing two torpedo geeps passing each other. Just as things were lining up, one of the yard crew members walked in front and by the time he was out of frame, so was the 7506. The 7571 survives under ADM Ownership and works with a former Conrail MT4 slug 1004.
