This album features year three of Conrail operations.

The year saw GP-30’s replace Alco’s from Morrisville yard service, but Alco’s still operated out of Bethlehem, Enola, Conway and Mingo Junction into the spring of 1979.  Electric power remained strong as former PRR GG-1’s, E-44’s, and E-33’s led mainline freights throughout the spring of 1979.

Both units were in heavy use on the NY&LB replacing GG-1's at the end of the electrified line until their retirement in the summer of 1979.

Conrail was contracted by SEPTA to operate regional Philadelphia passenger service until the early 1980's. Diesel-powered passenger service through Abrams yard was either by ex-RDG RDC's or FP-7A push-pull trains.

The prototype for the great GG-1 fleet went through many paint schemes in it's storied career. A simple CR blue with the large "can opener" replaced the wild red, white and blue Bicentennial scheme that lasted from 1976 through the summer of 1977.

CR retired their freight fleet of GG-1's in 1979, but NJDOT contracted CR to operate GG-1's 4872-4884 until the end of October, 1983.

On October 31, 1983 this unit would hold the distinction of being the last operating GG-1 when she was called upon to rescue 4877 in it's last run on the NY&LB.
