Conrail Prototypes and One-offs

This is a gallery for some of the more unique pieces of rolling stock Conrail devised.

CR 797000- Class FE51D

Conrail 797000 is seen at Hollidaysburg, PA. This was the first prototype Container Direct flatcar, which was intended to divert shipments of bulk commodities back onto rail from truck-dominated markets. This car was built in 1986 and was tested to ship anthracite culm from north-central PA to Scott Paper's new cogeneration facility in Chester, PA. Scott was pleased with the concept, but required a larger container payload. This requirement led to the construction of CR 797001 at Hollidaysburg in 1988.
