Conrail Around Washington DC

The nation's capitol is not thought of as a bastion of industry. Thanks to former PRR lines serving the district and a notable branch serving some coal fired power plants Conrail was there.

Three E44s, led by 4402, are on a S/B Potomac Yard bound freight as they pass through Amtrak's Baltimore-Washington International Airport station on the Northeast Corridor. 1:48PM on 1/25/81 in BWI Station, MD.

CR 6366, 2240, 2750, 1978 & 8024 at Collington Siding on the Popes Creek Secondary, 8/83

SD40-2 6366, GP30 2240, U23B 2750, B23-7 1978 & GP38-2 8024 are leading a S/B ULK (Chalk Point) coal train. Here, before heading south, it is switching some cars at the south end of the Collington Siding under Old Annapolis Road on the Pope's Creek Secondary. 12:15PM on 8/14/83 in Bowie, MD.

CR 6421 Leads CSX Z409 (Conrail SEPY) at Muirkirk MD, 2/93

The Chase MD wreck of 1987 changed Conrail's I95 corridor operations considerably, forcing most trains still using the Northeast Corridor to run at night and in limited windows. As a result, Conrail used trackage rights on CSX for through trains that used to run on the former PRR between Washington (Northern Virginia, really) and Philadelphia. Here CSX symbol Z409 with CR 6421/CR 6711/CR 6322/CSX 4261 pass the future site of the Muirkirk MARC station on 02/09/93.

CR 8267 on the tail of WHWA01-02 switching Capital Power at the south end of the Virginia Avenue tunnel. 3/93

WHWA01-02 (today's CSX B701) is seen switching Capital Power at the south end of the Virginia Ave/M Street Tunnel. Power was the 8267 on the south end and the 9415/9416 pair on the north end. Date was 03/02/93. The cars on the left went down the short branch to the Evening Sun newspaper building.

WHWA01 working the warehouses along "I" St in Washington DC. Anyone who rode across I-395 that looked down at the tracks around Virginia Tower and saw boxcars in the yard, this is where they were going. RF&P cars were common.

Conrail local WHWA01 is about to work Dixie Plywood in the Pennsy Drive area of Landover/Ardwick on 03/17/93. Here, the 8274 pulls in the clear and the 9416 will actually spot the cars on the track to the right.

WHWA01 action on 04/06/93. Heading north past the Cheverly WMTA Metro station to switch Merchants Terminal on Cabin Branch Dr and the Giant compound in Landover, Md. Giant received covered hoppers of plastic pellets for making milk cartons and Merchants got reefers. Power was CR 9415/CR 9416/CR 8269.
