Conrail in and Around Philadelphia - Page 5

Philadelphia was more than the location of Conrail's corporate headquarters. It also featured lots of blue action.

Conrail's lines in the Philadelphia area were a combination of ex-Penn Central and ex-Reading lines, and varied from big time railroading along the Northeast Corridor to lightly tracked branches like the Venice Industrial.

CR 8719 - ex RDG 1519, nee RDG 13, an SW900M (retired on 8-4-86 and probably scrapped at Hollidaysburg) - switches the Jack Frost National Sugar Refining Co. facility, located on N. Delaware Ave. in Philadelphia, PA. This facility was shut down in 1982 and torn down in 1997. An interesting note: The 8719 was featured briefly in a scene in the movie Rocky II, which was filmed in the former Reading yard in Port Richmond around the time this photo was taken. Photo processed 9/78.

OOPS!!! Conrail covered hopper #886174 lays on its end, spilling grain all over the place, Port Richmond Graino, Philadelphia, Pa Date unknown (late 1970's or early 1980's).

Conrail SW1001 9411 (ex-RDG 2611) is seen at Greenwich Yard in South Philly, PA on 12/25/1983. Note that this unit did not even receive the typical early-Conrail hasty paint-out treatment, shop forces instead simply slapped "CR" stencils over the Reading logo and new numbers on top of the old RDG reporting mark.
