Conrail in and Around Philadelphia - Page 5

Philadelphia was more than the location of Conrail's corporate headquarters. It also featured lots of blue action.

Conrail's lines in the Philadelphia area were a combination of ex-Penn Central and ex-Reading lines, and varied from big time railroading along the Northeast Corridor to lightly tracked branches like the Venice Industrial.

Photo taken with permission. At 1:46 on this cloudy Saturday afternoon CR SD40-2s 6509 and 6455 haul sixty-six empty coal hoppers northbound through Wanamaker Yard. The train weighed in at 2,046 tons.

CR SD40-2 6510, with the help of three other EMD standard cabs, brings 76 loads of coal (9,955 tons) across the Darby Creek drawbridge at the south end of Wanamaker Yard, destined for the Philadelphia Electric Company's Eddystone power plant.

Conrail C30-7 #6601 leads a westbound CAAL (Camden-Allentown) at Frankford Junction. The extra marker on the porch was for when use when the power had to run around trains on the High Line before the Park Connection was built.

Conrail C36-7 6634 is seen leading a PICA across the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, PA on 1/9/94. Back then, Camden-bound trains had to run on the Northeast Corridor, as the Engelside connection that allows trains to move from the Trenton Line to the Delair Branch did not yet exist.

A nice variety of former Penn Central units are at Camden, N.J. this November 1976 day.

Alco RSD-15's 6812 and 6816 are switching, the first number and last number of the 5 total on the roster. Also seen are an SW-7, SW-1, and a pair of E44's. The two RSD's would become MT-6's 1125 (6812) and 1126 (6816) and go through multiple re-numberings under NS, 1125 to NS 1114, then 985, then eventually to RPU6 851. CR 1126 became NS 1115, 985, then RPU6 857.
