Conrail in and Around Philadelphia

Philadelphia was more than the location of Conrail's corporate headquarters. It also featured lots of blue action.

Conrail's lines in the Philadelphia area were a combination of ex-Penn Central and ex-Reading lines, and varied from big time railroading along the Northeast Corridor to lightly tracked branches like the Venice Industrial.

Amtrak 814 Philadelphia, PA 4-7-1977

With CR switchers and GG-1's mixed with Amtrak power at the engine terminal, Amtrak Metroliner 814 pulls into Philadelphia's 30th Street Station in April, 1977 during the 44-day Septa TWU strike.

While a pair of ex-PC E-44's(4442 and 4404) lead a mixed freight on the high line, Amtrak GG-1 904 roars past Arsenal tower on May 15, 1977.

All attention this day, however, was focused on the next Amtrak train to come through: The maiden run of refurbished former PRR GG-1 4935 sponsored by the "Friends of the GG-1."

Though unpleasant for commuters, the 44-day Septa TWU strike from March 25 to May 8, 1977 brought an interesting mix of CR and Amtrak power to 30th Street station.

A pair of Conrail freights travel on the old PRR High Line, the freight bypass allowing trains to avoid 30th St Station in Philadelphia, PA in 1982.

RDG cabins like 94013, soon to be CR 18830, were familiar sites at Abrams yard through the winter of 1977. They were often tucked behind SW1500 or GP7’s.
