North Jersey is home to a myriad of rail operations, and is one of the few locations where Conrail still exists.

CR retired their freight fleet of GG-1's in 1979, but NJDOT contracted CR to operate GG-1's 4872-4884 until the end of October, 1983.

Along with 4877 and 4879, 4882 would remain as one of the last three operable GG1's available for the last revenue run on October 28, 1983, and for the Farewell to the GG1 celebration on October 29, 1983.

At South Amboy, NJ in July, 1981, we were able to climb into the cab of CR GG-1 4883. This 1939 era Altoona-built GG-1 was truly an engineering marvel, and the view of the controls and engineer's window was one of the grandest in all railroading.

The November 1952-built GP-7 operated as part of CR's contracted commuter service with NJDOT. Repainted into NJDOT colors in 1978, the old EMD unit continued in CR-contracted commuter service until January 1, 1983 when NJ Transit took over passenger operations from CR. Coming under ownership of NJ Transit, the GP-7 served NJ commuters until retirement in 1993.

NJ Transit donated the GP-7 to the United Railroad Historical Society, and in 1996, the locomotve was repainted to original green and yellow CNJ livery by the Jersey Central RHS, Inc.
