Conrail In and Around Harrisburg - Page 5

Harrisburg has always been a railroad city. Tracks converge on the city from almost all directions, making it a major crossroads. Harrisburg is also the home to the famous Enola Yard on the west shore of the Susquehanna River. Enola was once the largest freight yard in the world, but its size has changed as operating plans have changed, but was incredibly important all through Conrail's years.

This gallery features photos from all around the Harrisburg area, from Duncannon on the Pittsburgh Line east to Rutherford Yard on the city's east side, and also the Enola Yard area.

A pair of motors who have been ridden hard and put away wet are these two former Penn Central U23Cs, taking a break from yard duties to allow themselves to be forever captured on K64. The 6905 and 6903 have been off the roster and out of existence for many years.

CR 7106 Harrisburg, PA 4-12-1984

Still in PC paint at the end of her operating days, CR GP9 7106 rests in a Harrisburg deadline in April, 1984.  "REW" is stencilied on her nose and a happy face has been added by her handrail.

ENPI-6X, led by CR 7806, passes the "pimple" at the west end of Enola yard on Dec. 26, 1982. The pimple was evidently used for temporary spotting of cabooses which were than rolled down onto the end of departing westbounds.

CR 7944 is approaching the Linglestown Road overpass near Rockville Bridge. 8/81

A tattered ex Penn Central GP38-2 7944 has just come across Rockville Bridge from Enola Yard and is approaching the Linglestown Road overpass. A sliver of Rockville Tower can be seen in the far distance.

A trio of GP38-2s, including CR 8094 and CR 8116 pass Rockville tower as they head north onto the Buffalo Line in 1981. Today, the tower is gone, as are the blue maintenance vehicles, the Geeps went to CSX, and railfanning here is a good way to get oneself cited for trespassing. Sad how times change...

CR 8276 Camp Hill PA, 12/21/1986

Norfolk Southern run-through power was often a frequent find on ENRO and ROEN, the NS interchange trains from Enola to Roanoke. Here a high hood GP lends some muscle to the southbound ENRO working through Camp Hill PA.

CR 8590 Enola, PA 8-3-1979

Former PC SW-1's 8590 and 8597 rest in lines of black and blue power at the Enola engine terminal in August, 1979.

CR 8696 Harrisburg, PA 4-12-1984

In the cramped spaces of a Harrisburg deadline in April, 1984, CR SW8 8696 (ex-EL 367) still shows her Erie Lackawanna lettering.

CR 8711 Enola, PA 1-1-1983

Conrail SW900 8711 (ex-RDG 1511) is seen resting near the hump at Enola Yard while a pair of TOFC flatcars go for a ride down the hump. We can be certain that this is NOT recommended operating practices, but it makes for an interesting photo.

CR 884883 at Enola Yard

I'd normally just crop out everything but the freight car, but this scene was just too cool to not post. GP9 7551 and a sister are switching Enola Yard while a H50 covered hopper with PRR paint bleeding through cruises by. To imagine there were days where this sort of scene was ordinary...

CR 9019 Harrisburg, PA 4-12-1984

Almost 5 years since I last saw her working the Secaucus, NJ yard, CR SW-9 9019 rests, still in her EL paint, at a Harrisburg deadline in April, 1984.

CR 9407 Rutherford, PA 06-2-1976

Just an overview of the former Reading Lines coal dock at Rutherford (Harrisburg area). RDG SW1001 2607 has yet to be renumbered to CR 9407, and it's keeping good company this day in the form of a Western Maryland F7A and SD35.

CR 9531 Enola, PA 1-1-1986

Conrail SW1500 is seen sitting at Enola Yard in 1986. What is probably the most interesting part of this photo is what appears to be CR 7440, the "torpedo-tube" GP9 in blue paint without and logos sitting third deep in line, behind SW8 8673.This unit had previously been one of the few Conrail units that had its bell and horns painted red, along with black battery boxes and side sills, indicating it was restricted to service in Canada only. Stuff like this is what makes Conrail a fascinating road to model.
