Conrail's Chicago Line - Page 7

Conrail's Chicago line stretched from Selkirk, NY to Chicago, IL and was an extremely important double track main in which the majority of its traffic from the western roads reached the New England states and the East Coast.  Included on this route were important terminal cities like Toledo and Cleveland, OH and Conrail's major classification yard in Elkhart, IN.  This busy route saw anywhere from 50-60 trains a day including a lot of foreign power from western connections with Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Santa Fe and their predecessors.

Westbound Conrail freight led by the 8050 at Waterloo, IN in July 1996

CR 8095 at Whiting, IN

This eastbound Conrail freight with 8095 leading has diverged from the former PRR route at Lake Junction(now CP 505) and is now swinging onto the former New York Central alignment at Whiting, IN. June 1982. Conrail severed the PRR main line through East Chicago about 1980. After that date, all eastbound trains (except local moves to the Whiting refinery) diverged off of the PRR at Lake Jct and took the former NYC alignment through East Chicago. On the west side of Gary, at CP 501, the Broadway Limited (and any other train) could diverge from the Chicago Line and return to the PRR route at Clarke Jct. Doug Davidson photo with permission

CR 8096 at Ashtabula Ohio 4/25/89

Conrail GP38-2 rests between assignments 8096 at Conrail's Ashtabula, Ohio "AY" West Yard. The building to the right and the tower are long gone, and I believe this is the only photo I have showing either structure. I wasn't bright enough to capture much more than trains for the most part.

I took this from the Cardinal as it was leaving Chicago. At the time, the route was CR ex PRR and NYC to Pine Jct, then the B&O to Wellsboro, where it took a C&O branch to La Crosse, then the C&O of Indiana on to Hamilton OH. I caught this local at Pine Jct.

GTW 6422 South Bend, IN 6-1-1998

At South Bend, IN Conrail shared trackage rights with the Grand Trunk Western for a mile a half thru town along the Chicago line, an arrangement that had been around since the GTW first built to South Bend in 1880. An example of that arrangement is here at MP 437 as GTW westbound freight behind GP40-2 No. 6422 (ex DT&I) rolls west through South Bend, in June 1998.  Doug Davidson photo with permission
