Former Southern Crescent E-8A's 4331 (ex-SR 6907) and 4330 (ex-SR 6914) came to NJDOT in 1980. Following years of service for the Southern Railway, and Amtrak from 1978 to 1980, the E-8A's would operate in NJ for about a year as part of CR's NJDOT contract passenger operations until retirement. SR CEO Stanley Crane was able to sell the E-8A's to Amtrak in 1978 when he removed cash draining passenger operations from SR, and then oversaw both their retirement in 1981, and eventual removal of all CR passenger operations in 1983, as CR CEO.
