Surviving SW1001s

Conrail inherited its rare SW1001 fleet from the Reading. Built in November and December 1973, these 1000hp switchers were commonly found on the ex-Reading branches in eastern Pennsylvania and throughout the eastern end of the system. Because of their common use in cab signaled territory, a number were outfitted with cab signal and or LSL equipment.

In 1999, the fleet was divided between Norfolk Southern and CSX. Those assigned to NS were renumbered into the 2100 - 2111 series, while CSX allocated units became 1120 - 1129.

CR 9401

Former RDG 2601, soon to become CSXT 1120, is at Cumberland, MD on 7/9/99. Unit would be traded to LLPX and became LLPX 91.

CSXT 1121 (CR 9402)

Former CR 9402 with the CR Philadelphia Division "Customer Satisfaction" logo is at Stoney Creek, PA on 4/21/01. This unit would later go to Amtrak in a trade for two F40PH's, now running as AMTK 569.

CSX SW1001's 1123-1121 make a hard pull at the east end of Pavonia Yard in Camden, NJ on 6/4/2001. I was putting my power away for the day when this started up.. Life at the office is hard!! Notice the 1121, Ex Conrail 9402 has the old Phila Division logo on it, one of two units(the other GP38 7868) to have the logos applied.

NS 2102 at Bayonne. Bayonne usually gets "blessed" with having one of these little buggers regularly assigned to us. Sorry to say but they are quite useless by themselves. We should have two assigned and keep them MU'd. They're just not strong enough by themselves and probably shouldn't be MU'd with anything else.

I shot this SW1001 as soon as I arrived for duty taking one of the NS slab trains out of Philadelphia. The old girl is showing love for her Reading heritage with safety stripes, wording, green and yellow paint and the Reading diamond visable everywhere!
