Surviving Conrail 60' Boxcars

Class 141B

Despite the NYC-style class, the 11 cars in class 141B were built very early in the Penn Central era.

Class 142B

Class 146B

The 146B class was built by PC at the former NYC Despatch Shops in early 1968 as PC 277000-277057 which became CR 277000-277057.

Class 937B

Class 937B was composed of two groups of very similar cars built by Greenville in 1964. 41 cars had a 16'0" door opening and were originally assigned to Ford's Cleveland engine plant. 53 cars had a 16'4" door opening and were originally assigned to Chevy engine plants in Tonawanda, NY and Flint, MI

Class 973B

Class 973B was built by Despatch Shops in 1965 as NYC 56372-56450, comprised of 79 cars all originally assigned to Chrysler parts service.

Class 987B

The 987B class consists of 110 cars built by Pullman-Standard in 1966, which were given the series NYC 53860-53969.

Class 989B

The 989B class consists of 142 cars built in 1966. These were given the series NYC 56876-57017.

Class 990B

Class 990B was a group of 199 cars built by Despatch Shops in 1966 and assigned to Chrysler originally.

Class B60B

The B60B class was created when Conrail rebuilt 33 former PC X64A class boxcars at their Holidaysburg Car Shop in 1984 when they extended the height of the cars. These cars were numbered CR 277401-277429 & 277501-277504.

Class B60C

The B60C class was created when Conrail rebuilt 414 former PC X62 class boxcars at their Holidaysburg Car Shop in 1984 & 1985 when they extended the height of the cars. These cars were numbered CR 277101-277400 & 277601-277751.

Class B62C

The B62C class was created when Conrail rebuilt 282 former PC X62B class boxcars in 1988 by extending their overall height. These cars became CR 221069-221299 and 221851-221903.

Class B62D

The B62D class was created when Conrail rebuilt 268 former PC X76 class boxcars during 1988 & 1989 by extending there overall height. These cars became CR 221300-221568.

Class B62E

The B62E class was created when Conrail rebuilt 8 former PC/PRR X61D & 42 former PC/PRR X61E class boxcars in 1990 by extending there overall height. These cars became CR 221792-221842.

Class B62F

The B62F class was created when Conrail rebuilt 99 former PC/PRR X61D class boxcars in 1990 by extending their overall height. These cars became CR 221693-221791.

Class B63A

CR 223001-223122 was built by Berwick Forge and Fabricating in Dec 1977

Class B63B

CR 223301-223462 were built by Berwick Forge and Fabricating in 1978. CR 223301-223433 were assigned to auto engine service while 223434-223462 were general service boxes.

Class B63D

The B63D class was built by FGE at Alexandria VA in 1980 in two orders and number series. CR 222837-223000 and 283786-283851.

Class B65A

CR 376001-376190 were built by FGE in 1977

Class BE62D

Originaly built by Pullman Standard in 1974 as EL 68080-68124 and became CR 218277-218321. 16 cars in this series renumbered to CR 282800-282815.

Class BP62A

Former SSW class B-70-70 (from SSW series 63460-63659, built by PC&F) boxcars leased by Conrail in 2-90; all were returned by 6-95. Cars then went to CPAA 206600-206659 series, then to AOK 70000-70029 (some to AOK 2066xx), then finally, AOK 70000-series cars were renumbered to KCSM 19000-19026.

Class BR62A

The BR62A class was originally built as RDG 19000-19049 by Berwick in 1973 and classed XLL. Only 22 cars were renumbered into the original series of CR 279771-279860. The other 28 cars were renumbered into the CR 279379-279757 series. RDG 19005 lasted well into the CR era before being renumbered CR 279420 in Feb. of 1997.

Class BR62C is comprised of 4 cars from RDG series 19907-19910, RDG class XAPd.

Class X57

Former PRR cars; CR 220266-220294.

Class X59

The X59 class was built as PRR 90090-90264 by ACF in 1965. 10 cars carried their PRR numbers to CR and were renumbered CR 211051-211061. Another 42 cars that carried their PRR numbers to CR became CR 218415-218456. PC renumbered the X59's into three different series which totaled 120 cars. 11 cars were renumbered to PC 218763-218774, 95 cars were renumbered to PC 220294-220464, and 14 cars were renumbered to PC 281030-281043. The PC cars would be renumbered into the same series on Conrail.

Class X59A

Former PRR 90265-90280 60' double door boxcars. CR assigned them to numbers 220467-270571.

Class X61

Former PRR cars. X61's that were repainted NS received NS class BP146.

Class X62

CR 274825-275128,275138-275398 ex PC same #. CR 274825-275067 built by Dispatch Shops in 1968. 274068-275128,275138-275398 built by Altoona during 1969-1970.

CR 275129-275137, 275412-275443, & 278005-278044 ex PC same #. 275129-275137 built in 1969, 275412-275443 built in 1970 & 278005-278044 built in 1968. All cars built at Altoona.

Former PC cars.

Class X64

The PC's Sam Rea shops built 270 X64 boxcars from 1968-1969.

Class X64A

PC's Sam Rea shops constructed 79 X64A cars in 1970.

Class X66

CR 279470-279504 ex PC same #. Cars were built by Altoona in 1969.

Class X79

Class X79 was a group of 100 cars built by Thrall in 1973, owned by the Kellogg Company and leased to PC. These cars were in service for PC and later Conrail until 1983 when the lease expired; they were then relettered to KELX, keeping their original numbers.

Class X82

The X82s were built by Pullman-Standard in 1974 for the PC, a class of 277 cars. They were delivered with Pullman-style doors, and most retrofitted doors were of the Youngstown type. CR 220225-220265, 281400-281635 ex PC same #.

ex HLMX 60' Insulated Boxcars

Former HLMX insulated boxcars. The class was eventually returned to Helm, once again serving in their lease fleet.

CR 218294 - Class BE62B

Car is ex EL 68097; was deleted on 8-2-07. Stenciling on side of car reads "De-Rack Only - Do Not Reload".

CR 218513 - Class X61E

Car is ex PRR 110924 and was built 9-65, rebuilt 7-91, painted 8-96 at HCS; later deleted on 11-29-08.

CR 220165 - Class X61E

Car is ex PC 220165/PRR 110884 and was built 6-66, repainted 11-93 at HCS, deleted 12-30-06.

CR 220173 - Class X61E

Car is ex PC 220173/PRR and was built 6-66; to CSX - deleted 6-1-05.

CR 221008 - Class X78

Car is ex PC 221008 and was built 7-73.

CR 223742 - Class B62G

Car is ex CR 277350/CR 275139/PC 275139 and was built 2-70. It was deleted on 3-1-08.
