CR 6615 leads TV8B through CP 123 in Chester, MA at 09:04 on Dec. 30, 1987. Note the "End of cab signal" sign at right. The single-tracking of the B&A had only progressed this far at this point in time. The railroad was still double track/ABS west of here, but that would change the following year.

"Camel" 6617 leads PWSE through CP 57 in Charlton, MA. on March 10, 1990.

CR 6621 (2) at Middlefield, MA. on 4/2/88.

MBSE about to drop automatic block signal 131.11 in Middlefield, MA. on April 2, 1988. The signal is on borrowed time as the single-tracking of the B&A has progressed as far as CP 123 in Chester, and "the hill" is next.

C36-7 6632 leads TV-6 through CP 140 in Hinsdale, MA. Sept. 3, 1993.

CR 6657 in Chester, MA. on 6/30/84.

SD45-2 6657 leads SEBO-B past the hot box detectors near MP 123 in Chester, MA. on June 30, 1984. This is the present site of CP 123, with double track extending westward to CP 150 in Pittsfield and single track eastward to CP 109 in Westfield. The hot box detectors were removed at the time of the conversion to single track.

Trailing typical Alco smoke, massive CR 6791 C-636 drags a mixed freight out of Abrams along with PC GP-35 2380.

CR 6843 Chester, MA 5/10/80

Another "rare bird", on ConRail anyway, U30C 6843 heads up westbound tonnage past the signals at mile 126.3 in Chester, MA. on May 10, 1980. The 6843 was one of only 10 U30C's rostered by Big Blue.

CR 7661 King of Prussia, PA 2-12-1977

A quartet of mixed CR power, led by PRSL GP-38's 2001 and 2007, rumbles through Abrams yard in February, 1977.

CR 7949 Alliance, OH 02-2-1985

Two sets of helper power meet at the east end of CP Alliance on a cold but sunny February 1985 day. The 7949 would be one of the 100 leased GP38-2's that EMD called back after their 15 year lease was up. Many then went to work out on the Union Pacific from '87 to '89, this one as UPL 749. That nice PRR signal bridge has since been replaced.

CR 7978 Pittsfield, MA 2/26/1983

CR 7978 departs CP 148/North Adams Jct. with SPSE at 10:40 on Feb. 26, 1983. The train had just made a 19 car plus one caboose pick-up out of the junction yard. With the single-tracking of the B&A in the late '80's, CP 148 was replaced by CP 147 to the east of the Junction Rd. overhead and the signal bridge and "Y" signal mast became extinct. Another "Y" signal mast on the other side of the overhead also went away.

CR 8008 Rochester, NY 7/1977

A GP38-2 leads a pair of F units on an Eastbound intermodal train.

CR 8079 at Washington, MA. on 2/27/82.

CR 8079 leads SEBO-A past the signal bridge at MP 138 in Washington, MA. on Feb. 27, 1982. The two smallish silver poles either side of the tracks are dragging equipment indicator lights, as there were draggers on both tracks at this location and point in time. Both the draggers and signal bridge went the way of all good things when CR single-tracked the B&A in the late 80's.

CR GP38-2 8151 leads U23B's 2719, 2748, and 2781, and a GP into the tunnels at Gallitzin in August, 1979.

CR 8193 Altoona, PA 7/3/1978

CR 9598 King of Prussia, PA 2-12-1977

RDG SW1500 2759 (CR 9598) and N4 class cabin 92887 take a brief rest from working Abrams yard on February 12, 1977.

This was the last week that Abrams yard power remained pure Reading Lines.  All SW1500's and their caboose mates, and all GP-7's were untouched by CR stencils. 

Though not working the yard, there were two SW1500's with small CR stencils in the engine terminal.  The following week would see CR stencils applied to SW1500 9595 (RDG 2756) and GP-7's 5817 (RDG 625), 5828 (RDG 626), and 5835 (RDG 633).

CR ex PRR signal Effingham 77

Former w/b home signal at the Conrail/IC diamond in Effingham, Ill in 1977. The round light flashed an "O" when there were orders to pick up. This signal has since been replaced, and the crossing is now CSX/CN.

CSX (old Conrail) Detector, Harper, Ohio

The old Conrail Detector at Harper, Ohio, on CSX's Indianapolis line between Bellefontaine and Ridgeway, Ohio, as seen on April 21, 2007. This particular HBD/DED sits on the side of the highest point in Ohio, and could be heard for miles. I've regularly heard it from Sidney (about 40 miles distant), from Findlay (about 65 miles), and even once from Bryan (over 100 miles away). If you sit next to it, you can receive a lot as well. CSX (old Conrail) Detector, Harper, Ohio

A closeup view of the equipment of the detector at Harper, Ohio. This is the Servo Hotbox detector with protective ramps built around it to protect it from Dragging Equipment. The Servo has a door that unlocks when a train is on its circuit-the door protects the beam which measures the bearings as they pass over it, and closes when the train is gone. A detector does not know if a bearing is hot, it compares all bearings for any unusual ones. It also keeps a record printed out in the bungalow. Photo by Eric Kretz.

This view shows the bungalow, as well as the Servo hotbox detector and the Dragging equipment detector paddles which, when hit, notify the system of dragging equipment. It takes something substantial to register, an air hose usually is not enough to do it. One of several shots taken of those cumulus stacked up north of CP 140 at dawn on the 21st of Aug. 1993. Finally, a westbound enters the block down at Ballou's and lights up the approach-lit signals which adds to the interest.

On a cold December day in 1988, the old Lehigh Valley Easton Tower appears to still oversee traffic coming through Easton and over the Delaware river from Phillipsburg, New Jersey.
