Demolition and Scrapping - Page 2

Over the years thousands of freight cars, locomotives, structures and other components have been lost to the wrecking ball and scrappers torch. Fortunately for us, some of this carnage was captured and is showcased in this gallery.

CR F7A Collinwood, OH 2-11-1977

"Hanger queen" is probably the best way to describe this Penn Central F7A out behind the P1A shop at Collinwood. No number was visible, and as you can see it was being parted out with one of the windows missing. It's ran it's last mile. Another former NYC unit, U25B 2501, is in the background, and I'm sure it will be fixed and put back to work.

MO tower demo Cresson, PA 12-7-1998

Probably the saddest thing I watched while living in Cresson was the demolition of MO tower on Dec 7th, 1998. Several good efforts were put forth to save it, but it was just too far gone to move. Very few people were there other than the demo team to record this event, but a local innkeeper spotted the old blocking device board and managed to have the crew pick it out and save it. I believe the train board went to the Railroaders Museum in Altoona earlier. Very few PRR towers remained around Conrail by this date, so it was indeed sad to lose historic MO.

PC 4200-4245 Willow Grove, PA 12-11-1976

An unidentified ex-PRR E-7A(4200-4245 series) was on it's way, along with ex-PRR E-7A 4243 and NYC E-7B 4107, to scrap at Willow Grove, PA in December, 1976. The crude lettering shows the E-7A's destination as "Morrisville Scrap Co., Morrisville, PA. The E-7A's and E-7B were not on the April, 1976 roster. The low quality photo was taken with a Kodak Brownie camera and Ektachrome film.
