CR 6809 at Bonnie, IL

A UP freight with Conrail run-through power(CR 6809, 6966, 6760) is northward through Bonnie, IL on the old C&EI(Chicago & Eastern Illinois), in August 1993. This is part of the UP / Conrail freight routing known as the St. Elmo connection, designed to bypass the terminal congestion of St. Louis. Doug Davidson photo with permission

Headed for the Streator connection where it will become SFEL, run through Conrail power led by SD60 6841 drops down Edelstein Hill on the Santa Fe mainline, in August 1992, with an eastbound freight heavy with reefers on the head end. Doug Davidson photo with permission

UBO coal train passing beneath Wisdom Way overhead bridge on April 2, 1983. Headend of the train is just about to enter Deerfield and is approaching "the middle" signal bridge, so-called because it was about halfway between Greenfield East and West Deerfield interlockings and carried approach signals for both tracks in both directions. The track occupied by the train was removed several years ago.

CR 7774 on the BC Rail at South Williams Lake, BC. 7-6-86.

Conrail GP38-7774 is far from home rails, lost in a sea of green & red-white-blue British Columbia Railway diesels. Its coupled to BCR RS18-602 and will do some switching as soon as M630-714 gets out of the way. MId-afternoon on 7-6-86 in South Williams Lake, BC.

CR 7846 and 3370 on a UBO on 10/2/82. (1)

A loaded UBO grinds upgrade at Lake Pleasant in Montague, MA. on Oct. 2, 1982 with a mixed set of CR/B&M power. This location is about 3-4 miles east of East Deerfield yard.

CR 7846 and 3370 on a UBO on 10/2/82. (2)

This was one of those "you had to be there" moments as the photos don't do justice to the actual trackside experience. When that lash-up passed, you could literally feel the ground tremble from all those 600+/- cubic inch cylinders pounding up and down.

CR 7846 and 3370 on a UBO on 10/2/82. (3)

Moving up the line about a mile, we see the UBO passing beneath the Central Vermont overhead bridge about a mile west of Miller's Falls.

CR 7846 and 3370 on a UBO on 10/2/82. (4)

The five units weren't enough as the 11,700 ton train stalled soon after this photo was taken. The power cut off the train and returned to East Deerfield "for back-up". If they couldn't make it here, they sure weren't going to make Ashburnham hill between Athol and Fitchburg.

CR 7846 and 3370 on a UBO on 10/2/82. (5)

CR 7846 and 3370, along with one of the B&M units, have returned to East Deerfield and are heading for the "pit" to get more units.

CR 7846 and 3370 on a UBO on 10/2/82. (6)

Ahh, that's much better....."Let's go get 'em, boys!". With a GP38 added at each end, 7 units ought to be sufficient....we hope! Power for the UBO heading back to their train waiting in Miller's Falls.

CR 7903 and 2013 at East Deerfield, MA. on 10/9/82. (1)

Mixed group of CR, D&H, and B&M power departs East Deerfield for North Adams to pick up a coal train on Oct. 9, 1982.

CR 7958 Kansas City, KS July 15, 1978

With a skyline not normally associated with Conrail photos, Kansas City, Mo., a trio of Conrail units on a Santa Fe run through train is just about to enter the ATSF Argentine yard in Kansas City Kansas. This whole area has changed a lot with the rebuilding of the Santa Fe Junction area (bridge in the background) into a flyover junction with these tracks now on an elevated ramp.

Two former Conrail units lead 286 east along the Monongahela River, just west of Station Square.

CR 8283 leased to NJDOT for extra power on a Raritan Line train, at Penn Station Newark.

Conrail GP38-2, 8283, leased to NJDOT for extra power, and is assigned here, to a former CNJ Raritan Line train, at Penn Station Newark. The lightweight cars are former Missouri Pacific, and Texas & Pacific, ACF-built, aluminum coaches, which were train-lined for push-pull service, and so had a heavyweight, CNJ, arch-roof, cab/coach on the West end, which would lead this train, out of town.

CR 9506 east local Harmon 04191985

This is Conrail on another railroad only in the technical sense, since Metro North now owns the tracks. The freight service here is a direct descendant of the New York Central, though they would likely scoff at the volume handled here in the 1980's. A pair of SW 1500's works through Harmon on one of the Tarrytown based local jobs.

CR 9536 west local Harmon 04191985

A pair of SW1500's, two of over 100 such units, mostly ex PC, on Conrail, work a local job back to Tarrytown, approaching the Harmon station, once the scene of many electric-diesel power changes over the years.

DH 2918 Montague, MA 6/15/85

D&H, ex CR U33B 2918 leads MEBA in the Lake Pleasant vicinity of Montague, MA. on June 15, 1985. Unlike the B&M, the D&H U33B's were never renumbered.

DH 2918 Montague, MA 6/15/85

Stenciled for the D&H, ex CR 2918 leads MEBA near Lake Pleasant in Montague, MA. June 15, 1985. Exemplifying the interchangeability of parts, note the access panel below the cab on the 2918, which obviously came off another D&H unit. In the Guilford scheme of things, ironically, the two U23B's following have become MEC property, coming from the D&H.

Former CR U33C 6866/D&H 656 leads BFOA at Greenfield station on Aug. 9, 1987 with a few other GTI "second-hand specials", ex AT&SF SD26's.

Maxson Test Weight Car CR 80092 On the Greem Mountain RR Riverside, VT

Conrail contracted with foriegn railroads for scale testing. Among those companies that I tested was the Green Mountain/Vermont Rail System. The GMRC had five scales on its lines located at Riverside (once the home of Steam Town) Ludlow, Center rutland and Florence. Here we are in the process of testing GMRC's Riverside scale with CR80092 on 7/14/ 1994

P&LE 2038 (CR 7776) at Montague, MA. on 7/23/86.

A gaggle of P&LE GP38's and one lone D&H (ex RDG) GP39-2 lead eastbound tonnage through Montague station on July 23, 1986. And, what you may ask, is a photo of P&LE units doing here, besides the fact that the first two units are obviously ex CR? So happens that the lead unit, the 2038, is formerly CR 7776, the BiCentennial unit.

UBO-2A on 5/26/84. (1)

UBO-2A, a loaded coal train bound for the Public Service of New Hampshire generating plant in Bow, NH. grinds through Montague depot, MA. on May 26, 1984. Won't see a lash-up like that on the B&A, and not least for the C424M (DH 453), either...read on.

UBO-2A on 5/26/84. (2)

GP30's were scarcer than hen's teeth on the B&A but, here on the B&M (!) we get two of them! Here's the 2186, with the 2174 right behind.

The "class unit" of ConRail's GP40 fleet, the 3000. Not the first GP40 as some might believe. That distinction belonged to CR 3036. And, IIRC, this is the only time I ever got the 3000, this close, at least.
