GE C40-8W - Page 8

The Conrail C40-8W, a new generation in crew comfort locomotives. They were the first units bought new equipped with air conditioning, and the last units to come from the factory without ditch lights. The C40-8W's, numbered 6050 through 6285, began the era of grade crossing safety in the 1990's. 6110-6112 and 6114-6119 were equipped with strobe lights while 6113 was equipped with a strobe light and at one point had two sets of ditch lights mounted on the short hood end.

The "Comfort Cabs" sported the new reflective white frame stripe and nose lettering. The second order, beginning with 6100 wore the companies new CQI, Continuous Quality Improvement scheme. 6050-6149 were painted solid Blue from the factory, while the remaining units were given black anti-skid nose panels on the short hood end

The locomotive was built with the standard 2 piece front windshield and a 3 piece side window without sun visors. The side windows are among the largest, however, only the center pane can be opened.

CR 6432 east ML 440 Endwell 08231995

ML 440 rolls past the pond behind a mix of power, today an SD40-2, C40-8W and SD60M. Nice looking set of engines. Too bad there wasn't a little more water in the pond for a good reflection shot. Today's effort is 16 COFC and 63 racks.

OIBU passes CP Swain, rolling through on the main track as it rushes toward Buffalo.

CR 6481 west ML 401 Barton 05161994

Two EMD's and a GE roll 78 cars of ML 401 past one of Erie's classic semaphores between Barton and Waverly. It was near this point that the former LV Auburn Branch crossed under the Erie to reach Sayre.

Conrail C40-8W 749 leads a XGW20 ore train past CP-Belmont in Philadelphia, PA on 3/3/1996. The train is on the new connection to the High Line, en-route to Pier 122 to be re-loaded with iron ore.

CR 756 at Pittsburgh, PA

The crew on this doublestack train has a great view as they pass above the Station Square T stop.  The 756 would later be renumbered to 6282 and ultimately become CSXT 7395 after the split.
