GE C40-8W - Page 5

The Conrail C40-8W, a new generation in crew comfort locomotives. They were the first units bought new equipped with air conditioning, and the last units to come from the factory without ditch lights. The C40-8W's, numbered 6050 through 6285, began the era of grade crossing safety in the 1990's. 6110-6112 and 6114-6119 were equipped with strobe lights while 6113 was equipped with a strobe light and at one point had two sets of ditch lights mounted on the short hood end.

The "Comfort Cabs" sported the new reflective white frame stripe and nose lettering. The second order, beginning with 6100 wore the companies new CQI, Continuous Quality Improvement scheme. 6050-6149 were painted solid Blue from the factory, while the remaining units were given black anti-skid nose panels on the short hood end

The locomotive was built with the standard 2 piece front windshield and a 3 piece side window without sun visors. The side windows are among the largest, however, only the center pane can be opened.

TV 554 passes Bayview behind a pair of 40's-in this case, GE C40-8W and B40-8, trailing 46 Sea Land platforms. They'll go to the D&H at Bison, then on to Jersey, changing to an NYSW crew at Binghamton. The CR power will not run through.

TV 202 rolls its stack across the Chenango River bridge to a stop shortly ahead, seen from the flood wall on the east side of the river. There will be a quick crew change, and the train will once again be rolling toward Croxton.

Power for today's EDPI ran lite from Edgemoor north to the O-track at Marcus Hook, PA along Amtrak's Northeast Corridor to pick up their train.  The cars were setout by a yard job from Stoney Creek off the Linwood Industrial Track.  The consist today will be CR 5606, 6029, 6771 (offline), 6179 (offline), 9x34 for 1,982 tons.

CR 6182 Leads a Train Alone at CP Cannon, 2/96

Finding single units leading trains was not a common occurance. Here C40-8W 6182 leads an eastbound train alone over Shermans Creek through CP Cannon. The interlocking here is actually on the bridge.

CR 6182, CR 5565 at Berea, OH

An empty hopper train is making its way through Berea, OH in early May of 1997. Leading the consist are CR C40-8W 6182 and CR SD60M 5565. This westbound train is just about to pass Berea tower (CP-194 Chicago Line) and has just come off Cleveland's "Short Line" or "Belt line" (as some call it). It is taking the connecting track over to the Chicago Line. Things look very different now; The start of the Indianapolis Line (in the foreground) is now the double tracked CSX main. The original GRS "Type G" signals in the picture are also gone. The Chicago Line is now NS. The connecting track is still in place and fully signaled, but has been used almost never in the last 10 years (except for occasional derailment reroutes and maintenance equip storage). The former "Big Four" sandstone depot is just to the right of the photo edge, just out of sight.
