GE C30-7A - Page 4

GE built 50 C30-7A's for Conrail in 1984.  A variant of the C30-7, this 12-cylinder version produced the same 3,000hp as the C30-7 V16.  Conrail assigned them CR series 6550-6599.

Note the stone arch bridge at right which aptly shows the origional right-of-way bypassed by the present one in 1912. Signal 129.02 displays the most permissive aspect of the downgrade signals on Washington hill..G/G. This allowed for more varied aspects to be shown to downgrade trains, affording them a look further out ahead. The upgrade signals, with yellow "G", showed G/R as their most permissive aspect.

CR 6568 struggles upgrade west of Chester MA on the Boston Line, June 1987

For a number of years, I had wanted to get up the the former B&A. Finally, I had the opportunity in 1987. I was not disappointed. The scenery in the Berkshires was beautiful and there was plenty of access to the east side of Washington Hill. Not a gate nor a "No Trespassing" sign to be seen. We camped along the railroad a couple nights without a problem. The fog was starting to lift, west of Chester, MA on June 13th, as westbound manifest MBSEX struggled upgrade, led by C30-7A No. 6568. Sadly, I didn't get back until 1994, and by then the area was gated and signs posted.

Westbound Conrail manifest MBSEY grinds upgrade near Bancroft, MA on June 13, 1987, led by C30-7A No. 6570. The C30-7As were one of the things that drew me to the B&A. In hindsight, the C32-8s were a bonus.

CR 6573 leads TV-6X past Washington depot at 11:14 on Jan. 4, 1994. As a trivial aside, that's not a "hair" I missed in the photo at left. This spot in the foreground is the former location of Washington depot and freight house. When the buildings were razed, the basements weren't filled in completely, which resulted in the occasional "sinkhole" forming. Railroad employees, I assume, would stick a tree branch in the hole as a warning to others of the hazard. That's what you're seeing.
