GE B23-7 - Page 4

During the 1970's, EMD was turning out a very successful and reliable Dash-2 line (GP38-2, GP40-2, SD40-2). General Electric, in an effort to gain lost ground, introduced an improved Dash-7 line which proved to be a huge improvement over the earlier U-Boats. Between 1977 and 1979, Conrail purchased 141 of the twelve-cylinder 2,250hp B23-7's. They continued on to new owners, NS and CSX, in 1999.

The 1990 leads a solid six unit group of B23-7's as a light engine move eastward past MP 139 in Hinsdale, MA. on April 27, 1983.

CR 1991 B23-7 Collinwood 06-83

A nice mix of eighties style Conrail with B23-7 1991 leading eastbound past the fuel and sand towers at Collinwood, Ohio in June of '83. Has the looks of an ELBU with all those CN cars up front.

CR 1991 Tunnelhill, PA 1981

CR B23-7 1991 is the rear unit on a westbound empty coal train at Benny Curve in 1981. This view clearly shows where the old Track 2 was removed. In the background you can see the grade separation between the new Tracks 2 and 3 and Track 1 on The Slide.

A little B23-7 is leading much bigger units on an Eastbound coal train.

The 1994 brought an SPPO (SPringfield, MA.-POrtland, ME.) up the Conn River line from Springfield on Oct. 16, 1982. He left the train on the Deerfield loop and is on his way to the "pit" to get another locomotive before continuing the trip.

Returning from the "pit", the 1994 has been turned and added B&M GP38 204, as they head back to the train on the loop.

A few days later, on Oct. 19, 1982, the 204 and CR 1994 are back at East Deerfield yard with a POSP. B&M GP18 1755 is the west end switcher this day.

This makes three trips to East Deerfield within a week for your "intrepid" (?) photographer. A POSP is seen here crossing the Connecticut River at East Deerfield East on Oct. 22, 1982, and....there's our "buddy", the 1994 again.

POSP got to the west end of East Deerfield yard faster than I did, so he's already past the "railfan's bridge" or "dry bridge" as the B&M boys refer to it, and is shoving his drop back into the yard.

B23-7 2001 leads a gaggle of mixed four axles with TV-6 at the Middlefield/Becket town line east of MP 129 on May 10, 1985. Other units include the 1950 and GP15-1 1659. Lash-ups like this were the occasional reprieve from a steady diet of C30-7A's.

B23-7 2001 and mate 1931 head west with a train of "YSOFC" (yellow s**t on flat cars) at CP 83 in Palmer, MA. on Aug. 15, 1998. Yeah, the stuff is indispensable at times, at other times it's just in the way.

A gaggle of six B23-7's, led by the 2007, have an SENH in tow by the old depot in Dalton, MA. on July 21, 1984. These half dozen B-Boat lash-ups were not uncommon on the B&A, and were fun to hear, especially compared to the "stealth" C30-7A's, which were only a month away from taking over the B&A at this time. This photo really fits the "Signals and detectors" listing, since both are in evidence.

CR 2010 GE B23-7 Akron 09-79

A nearly new 2010 leads an eastbound at Akron as it makes a setoff to the former PC South Akron yard from the ex EL main at South St TBS. In late 1979 I really wasn't thinking about what Conrail would look like in 2010, let alone believe it would be gone.

B23-7 2012 on, what I believe, is NHSE at Springfield station. The NHSE/SENH turns had a caboose at each end of the train, note the buggy behind the power in this shot. This facilitated the reverse/run-around move the trains had to make in both directions at Springfield because of the track layout.

Looks can be deceiving! Connecticut Southern road turn CSO-1 (Cedar Hill, New Haven-West Springfield, MA.) heads northward past the "Amshack" in Windsor Locks, CT. on Sept. 26, 1997. When CSO took over the remaining CR branches in the Hartford area of Connecticut they leased CR B23-7's 2008-2013 for their start-up and the train seen here is operating over the Amtrak Springfield line.

CR 2013 B23-7 Rootstown 06-83

Several things have disappeared since I took this shot in 1983. The Thomas Bros barn has been torn down, the B23-7 is gone, and last but not least Conrail itself is history at this location. That's a section of ELPI seen here, a heavy train from the looks of the exhaust. NS still uses this former PRR/PC line in a big way as it's main from Chicago to Conway and points east.

CR 2015 became NS 4082 at the split, then was later sold to the Meridian Southern Railway in MS as MDS 4082.

B23-7's 2017 and 1932 have just departed West Springfield yard at 07:01 on Sept. 5, 1997 as WAWS-5. They are passing the former B&A Mittineague depot on their way to "Traprock", the Lane quarry at MP 105 in Westfield.
