EMD SD45 - Page 6

Conrail inherited a fleet of 174 SD-45’s from the Reading 6100-6104 (5), the Erie Lackawanna 6066-6099 (34), and the Penn Central 6105-6239 (135). Built between December 1965 and December 1971, these 20-cylinder six-axle units produced 3,600hp using EMD’s 645E3 prime mover.

CR 6201 Akron, OH 04-8-1979

Not the best shot in the world, but I had wanted to get a Conrail unit on the "Erie" (not Erie Lackawanna...) bridge in Akron,Ohio. Framed as best I could between the shadows, ex PRR SD45 6201 leads a westbound on this ex Erie main. This bridge remains today, faded, tagged, and without track.

Crowds of steam railfans were all around the Curve awaiting the arrival of RDG 4-8-4 #2101 and helper Cuyahoga Valley Line 2-8-2 #4070 later that day.  They came for steam, but may have left Conrail fans as they saw F-units, GP30 and 35's, SD40, 45 and 45P's, and a few U-boats strain and groan their loads up the hill or brake hard as they rolled down to Altoona.

Based on the time, this train was likely ALPG or ALCA heading from Allentown to Philadelphia (Greenwich) or Camden.

A Westbound is about to enter the tunnel at the top of the mountain. The line that swings off to the right went to Hollidaysburg, and Altoona, via the "Muleshoe".

CR 6222 (SD45) and 6240 S Phila. PA 1/81

Former PC/PRR 6222 and former PC 6240 at the engine terminal in S. Phila. PA on 1/3/81. 

The 6222 went to the CNW on 4/4/83 where it was supposed to be renumbered CNW 6545, but never was before retirement on 10/10/89. (Info from Don Strack's UtahRails.net website)

The 6240 was rebuilt in August 1993 as SD40-2R CR 6986. It went to NS 3440 at the split, then was sold to CSXT 8910 in 2015.

Conrail SD45 6230 (ex-PC 6230, nee-PRR 6230) is helping to control a westbound train under the signal bridge at Kitanning Point, just east of Horseshoe Curve in 1981. The SD45s are gone, and soon the signal bridge will fall, to be replaced by sterile, soul-less modern models.
