EMD SD45 - Page 2

Conrail inherited a fleet of 174 SD-45’s from the Reading 6100-6104 (5), the Erie Lackawanna 6066-6099 (34), and the Penn Central 6105-6239 (135). Built between December 1965 and December 1971, these 20-cylinder six-axle units produced 3,600hp using EMD’s 645E3 prime mover.

CR 6078 and CR 6141 Rutherford, PA 1-1-1983

By 1983, much had changed on Conrail. The rainbow of locomotives that made the early years so interesting had largely been transformed into a uniform sea of blue, and new power meant the retirement of old mainstays like all these SD45s, shown in the deadlines at Rutherford Yard. Units like 6078 (ex-EL 3613) and 6141 (ex-PC 6141) helped pull big blue through the tumultuous early years, shame to see their lives end like this.

A westbound COFC climbs toward Gallitzin behind helper set 6085/6453, with 6042/8144/2732/3326 for road power. While most trains that got pushers had them on the rear, TV trains got them up front, due to the likelihood of the long trailer flats to derail when pushed. The Curve was quite a show in those days, when there was still a lot of older power around. You never knew what would show up.
