EMD GP40 - Page 3

Conrail's GP-40's came from Penn Central where they were assigned CR series 3000-3274. By 1995, Conrail retired and sold off all their GP-40's except one (CR 3264).

CR 3142

Former PC 3142 was at Buffalo, NY on 2/17/77. It was sold to KCS 769 in 9/83 and was wrecked in Wheelan, LA on 11/16/83.

CR 3145

Former PC 3145 was at Riverdale, IL on 11/28/76. Note that on the cab it is stenciled as a "G 40 P". It was sold to KCS 770 in 9/83 and was wrecked shortly after in Wheelan, LA on 11/16/83 and scrapped.

CR 3150 at Windsor Locks, CT. in Oct., 1979.

CR 3150 leads a cab hop northward on Amtrak's Springfield line past the old depot in Windsor Locks, CT. Amtrak "replaced" the depot in Windsor Locks with an "Amshack" about a mile south of this location along Rt. 159 between the Rt. 159 and I-91 overpasses over 30 years ago. There has been an ongoing effort by local citizens to have the station restored to it's former glory and use but, so far, nothing is happening.

GP40 3153 arrives at North Adams Jct. in Pittsfield, MA. at 11:18 on Feb. 26, 1983. Sharp-eyed perusers may note the second and third units look like GP35's with the lower sills and smaller fuel tanks, also the fourth unit, a GP40(?), appears to have a bent frame.

CR 3154 Wormleysburg, PA 3/79

ENGP-3 hustles out of Enola and heads for Cloumbia, PA and will run the A&G, Trenton Cutoff and Northeast Corridor to North Jersey and the Greenville Piers.

CR 3158 Newark, NJ 2-15-1982

CR GP-38-2 8134 and GP-40 3158 make up the rear of a quartet of blue power rolling through Newark, NJ in February, 1982.

CR 3165 Altoona, PA 5-22-1977

CR GP40 3165 runs third in a seven-unit consist that blasted up the Curve on May 22, 1977. The GP-40 leads U23B 2759, F-7A 1755, and GP40's 3065 and 3071.

Conrail Stack Train TV-300 rides the Indiana Harbor Belt thru LaGrange Park, Illinois on it's way from the C&NW Proviso Yard. This train is about to cross under the Burlington Northern racetrack.

CR 3184 4-27-79 Wilkinsburg, PA

CR 3184 4-27-79 Wilkinsburg, PA. Conrail SD40-2 6480 and GP40 3184 were running light (helpers returning from assisting a road train over the grade) when they were sideswiped by derailing or overhanging equipment from an adjacent track. The GP40 derailed and crashed through the concrete abutment/retaining wall and plunged down onto South Avenue. Fortunately, this happened when there were no vehicles waiting at the traffic light visible just beyond the underpass.

CR 3193 PC GP-40 Akron 03-77

A pair of PC GP-40's are eastbound on the former Erie Lackawanna in Akron ,Ohio March 1977. The high/wide loads head out were an Erie trademark that continued into Conrail until this line was abandoned in the early 80's.

Here's one example of a diesel making more smoke than a steamer. A westbound blasts out of Kent, Ohio in May of 1977 on the former Erie. It's passing former Reading 2102 in town for some weekend trips.

Conrail GP40 3196, U23B 2795, and a GP40-2 team up to bring a loaded coal train east through CP-Blandon in the fall of 1989. The old "high grade" right of way is visible to the left.

TV-302 arrives at Hornell running "wrong main" on track 1. Track 2 was in poor shape between Hornell and Hunt and was good for about 10mph. Eastbounds were run by train order down track 2 when possible, and TV-302 was always going to get priority to run the faster track. TV-302 also usually provided a nice morning train to chase thru the Canisteo Valley in good morning lighting.
