EMD GP40 - Page 2

Conrail's GP-40's came from Penn Central where they were assigned CR series 3000-3274. By 1995, Conrail retired and sold off all their GP-40's except one (CR 3264).

CR 3053 Allentown, PA 12-1988

CR C36-7 6639 leads GP-40 3053 and B23-7 1933 through Allentown yard in December, 1988.

CR 3055 Portageville, NY 6/5/1977

A pair of ex PC units lead an Eastbound around the curve at the West end of the Portage Bridge. The photo was taken from atop the Eastbound signal that once stood at the West end of the bridge. The new grade for the replacement bridge will probably swing over to the left and across the original grade that is visible under the pole line.

CR 3056 Westfield, MA 8/1979

Extra 3056 west hammers the diamond at Westfield, MA. in August, 1979. The B&A crossed the old New Haven Canal line here.

CR 3065 Altoona, PA 5-22-1977

CR GP40 3165 runs third in a seven-unit consist that blasted up the Curve on May 22, 1977. The GP40 leads U23B 2759, F-7A 1755, and GP40's 3065 and 3071.

CR 3066 Allendai, NJ 7/82

CR 3066 leads five more Geeps on BUOI at Allendai NJ in July of 1982.

CR 3071 Altoona, PA 5-22-1977

CR GP40 3165 runs third in a seven-unit consist that blasted up the Curve on May 22, 1977. The GP40 leads U23B 2759, F-7A 1755, and GP40's 3065 and 3071.

CR 3072

Former PC/NYC 3072 was at Cheektowaga, NY on 4/15/77.  It later became RSR 105 (Rochester Southern), then was transferred to QGRY 105, then later renumbered to QGRY 3105.

CR 3073 Bethlehem, PA 11-27-1976

CR 3075 at Chester, MA. on 1/9/82. (1)

GP40 3075 on the head of SPSE in Chester, MA. on Jan .9, 1982. The signal on the right is one of two home signals that were in Chester, this one usually referred to as "signal 126.3" even though, as a home signal, it has no number board.

One wonders if GP40 3078 is still wearing it's NYC livery with that white sill stripe showing that strongly. It's leading BOEL through North Becket, MA., with MP 134 directly beneath the overhead bridge, on July 18, 1981.

CR 3081 Marysville, PA 6-18-1977

CR 3083 on BOEL at Middlefield, MA. on 10/30/82.

Westbound BOEL at the "art colony" in Middlefield, MA. with an almost "pure" PC lash-up on Oct. 30, 1982. This was an attempt to "duplicate" the preceding sequence, taken a couple of weeks earlier, but the weather wasn't cooperating....GRRR!

CR 3091

Former PC/NYC 3091 was at 59th St., Chicago, IL on 6/11/76.  It would later become HLCX 3091.

Former PC/NYC 3104 was at Cheektowaga, NY on 4/14/77.  It was later sold to KYLE 3104, and in the early 1990's became a temporary lease unit for Amtrak as AMTK 650.

CR 3114 Amtrak Cleveland 02-78

A westbound freight on the Cleveland Line waits for Amtrak to finish up and get out of the Cleveland station over on the Chicago Line. Normally a middle of the night train in these parts, today's Lake Shore Ltd has been delayed due to weather. The old Muni stadium has since been torn down and replaced with a modern structure and the once mighty NYC line is now just one track. Both the ex PRR the Conrail train is on and the ex NYC came together right behind me at Bridge 1.

On track 15 outside the Juniata shops in August, 1977, GP40 3123 awaits service. The large lineup of former PC GP7 5874, GP38-2 7955, ex-EL RS-3 1037 (CR 5253), GP35 2271, and ex-EL GP7 1242 (CR 5980) show the continuing ill state of the power plant after a year of CR operations.

CR 3126

Former PC 3126 was at Buffalo, NY on 1/9/77. In 11/83 it was sold to DRGW 3174, became DRGW 3138 in 6/84, and was scrapped in 2003.

CR 3127 Binghamton, NY 4-21-1977

CR 3130 South Amboy, NJ 3-11-1978

CR 3131

Former PC 3131 was at Conway, PA on 10/3/76. (Note the interesting logo placement). This unit would later be sold to the Rio Grande as DRGW 3173, renumbered to DRGW 3131, purchased by W&LE as WE 3131, rebuilt to GP40-3 WE 302 in Dec. 2004.

In the morning of March 13, 1983, eastbound INPI-3 passing the home signal for Morgan Tower in Quincy, Ohio. Morgan Tower guarded the crossing of Conrail's Indianapolis Line with DT&I's main between Lima and Springfield. The two tracks at the left were the interchange between the two railroads.

CR 3132

Former PC 3132 was at Buffalo, NY on 3/11/77. It was sold to KCS 762 in 9/83 and was rebuilt in 1992 or 93 as NJT 4149 GP40PH-2.
