EMD GP40-2 - Page 3

The 3000hp GP40-2 came to Conrail from two sources, the Reading and new from EMD. The inherited units were some of the last units purchased by the Reading, while the new units were some of Conrail's first motive power purchases.

These high horsepower (at the time) locomotives were originally used heavily on TV and other high priority light trains. Over time they found their way into various other uses, from Road Railers to mineral trains, to local service toward the end of Big Blue.

Conrail GP40-2 3325 is a Phase II unit built in 5/1978. It is trailing on an eastbound TV train rounding Bennington Curve in 1984.

CR 3332 GP40-2 Sewickley 07-98

A Roadrailer train heads west past the former PRR Sewickley station. This train originated in Rutherford, Pa near Harrisburg, no stranger to the 2nd unit, CR 3277, the ex Reading 3673.

The extra 3332 east at the Hinsdale crossovers near MP 140 in Sept., 1979. At the time, this was a hand-thrown set of double crossovers. When CR single-tracked the B&A, they were rebuilt to higher speed turnouts and remote control by dispatcher and became CP 140.

Westbound Conrail local freight led by GP40-2 3338 is seen crossing the NS at Mike Tower in Ft. Wayne, IN in June 1988.

The signal bridge seen just behind the engines was torn down in the early 90's. This location used to be known as Wabash during the PRR and early PC days. It was renamed Mike by the PC in 1971 or 72. The tower was torn down in late 1988 and the entire interlocking was rebuilt around 1991. The diamond was removed and the mainline(which was single track by then) crossed the NS on a series of cross over switches. NS now controls this interlocking and uses it quite frequently for their Triple Crown trains entering or leaving its nearby facility.

Here a westbound Mail-3 rolls through the semi-famous Route 53 crossing in Cresson PA. This view was taken from around the corner from the iconic shot though, providing a somewhat different angle on this popular location.

CR GP-40-2 3348 (2/1979 built) leads SD-40s 6240 (ex-PC) and 6317 (ex-PC 6064), and SDP-45 6683 (ex-EL 3652) through Spruce Creek, PA in November, 1980.

At 08:14, it's a little too early for a well-lit photo at MP 129 in Becket, MA. The sun hasn't had a chance to get down into the valley to light up westbound BOEL as he works up the east slope, so we'll take off and try for another shot further up the hill.

Six miles further up the hill and 22 minutes later, BOEL works his way through Ballou's and MP 135 at 08:36. The open ground along the track on this side is the roadbed of the former "Ballou's" siding, listed in ETT #126 (4/29/1934) as having a capacity of 19 cars.
