EMD GP15-1

The GP15-1 was a somewhat unique locomotive. It was offered by EMD as a competitor not to another manufacturer's product line, but to railroads own rebuilding of older Geeps. Conrail's fleet of 100 of these lightweight road switchers arrived numbered in the 1600 series in 1979.

These units could be found system wide in use in their intended role as light road switchers working various locals both singly and in multiple unit lashups.

The WPLA-81 ran out of time in New Holland, PA so a recrew, RPLA-81, was called to go out and finish the work and bring the train back to Dillerville Yard. Typical 90's era branchline power around Lancaster were the GP38-2s and GP15-1s. Here the RPLA-81 is passing rural scenery east of Lancaster, PA along the New Holland Secondary.

Way out of place GP15-1 1621 leads SD40-2 6439 on an empty UFY hopper train at Montgomery, PA on 10/5/89. Train originated in York Haven, PA and was heading to Clearfield, PA to be forwarded back to the mines for reloading. I hope the air was good in this train. The 1621 lacked dynamic brakes so the air would have had to have been used for all slow downs and stops.. 1621 would spend many years in Lancaster, PA and along Amtraks lines in the eastern part of the Conrail system..
