EMD F Units - Page 2

Conrail inherited a small fleet of operable F units on day one. These railfan favorites did not last long, as most were traded in to EMD for new GP38-2s. Only two, 1648 and 1792 were painted blue, and neither of these wore the Conrail "canopener" logo.

CR 1884 (F7A)

CR 1884 (ex EL 6361, nee DLW 636A) is at Northfield, OH on 6/22/1977.

Ex-EL F-7A 7091 (CR 1885) and E-8A 814 (CR 4004) sit in the maintenance line outside the Juniata shops. The EL cab units may have seen their last operating days, and are being prepared for retirement at the Juniata shop's large deadlines.

CR 1888 Collinwood, OH 03-25-1977

A former Erie F3A and a former PRR FP7A "kiss" under the ex NYC coaling tower at Collinwood. It's almost Conrail's first birthday, and neither unit has much of a future with big blue. PC 4365 is the FP number.

CR 1893 (F7A)

Former EL 7131, nee ERIE 713A was at Riverdale, IL on 1/11/77.

CR 1893 Collinwood, OH 2-10-1977

Due to being very power short the first year or so a handful of former Erie Lackawanna covered wagons were taken out of storage (most from Scranton) and joined their PC sisters in Cleveland,Ohio. Less than a year into the new Conrail this former EL unit waits for some shop time at Collinwood in this Feb 1977 view. This unit was EL 7131, and Erie RR 713A before that, a 1951 product of EMD. Somehow the EL diamond has remained untouched even though the unit's been renumbered and "CR"d.

CR 3861 (F7B)

CR 3861 (former EL 7113) coupled to CR 1772 at Conway, PA on 5/28/77. At the time he photographed it, he noted on the slide that the 3861 was "the only one left".

CR 3862 (F7B)

CR 3862 (former EL 7122) still with its EL diamond is sandwiched between 1796 and 3059 in this view at Conway, PA on 4/10/77. Note the MU connection between the GP40 and the F7B -- not a combination you see too often!

CR 3862 Altoona, PA 5-22-1977

CR 3862 F7-B (ex-EL 7122) rests in the maintenance line at the Juniata shops in May, 1977.

CR 3862 Altoona, PA 5-22-1977

CR 3862 F7-B (ex-EL 7122) rests in the maintenance line at the Juniata shops in May, 1977. With many E and F units already retired and resting in dead lines, EL F7A 7091 (CR 1885) and E8A 814 (CR 4004) resting just behind the F7B may be awaiting parts removal, and will likely not be renumbered.

CR 3871 (F7B)

CR 3871 (ex PC 3871/PC 3471/NYC 3471/NYC 2471) was at Conway, PA on 7/10/77.

CR 3872 Cresson, PA 5/28/1978

CR 4362 Berea, OH 11-17-1977

One of those sweet early Conrail consists brings a Columbus to Collinwood van train past Berea tower. Even with the sun not being "just right" I had to shoot this FP7A/GP38/F7A set.

CR 4369 Collinwood, OH 07-8-1977

A pair of former PRR FP7's bring the daily Columbus to Cleveland van train into the yard at Collinwood. CR 4369 and 4345 will cut away and head for the engine house in short order.

CR 4369 Conway, PA 8-8-1977

With ancient PRR 40' boxcar 87243 behind, ex-PC FP-7 4369 and F-7A 1729 wait for assignment at Conway yard in August, 1977.

CR 4370 Collinwood, OH 04-8-78

Already worn out when they became property of Conrail, a small fleet of ex PRR FP7A's lasted only a few years after 04-01-76. By that date only 18 of the original 40 PRR units were still on the PC roster to be conveyed to the new Conrail, and several of those were already down for the count. CR 4370 had started life on the PRR in August of 1952, but by this April 1978 date it has only a few weeks left running. The PRR nose lift rings are still there, but the water tank under the frame is gone.

CR 4371 King of Prussia, PA 8-25-1978

Ex-RDG FP-7A 900 (CR 4371), repainted in SEPTA colors, blasts through Abrams yard with five coaches on a late August day in 1978.

The push-pull train has ex-RDG FP-7A 903 (CR 4373) on the rear.

CR 4371 King of Prussia, PA 8-25-1978

Conrail was contracted by SEPTA to operate regional Philadelphia passenger service until the early 1980's. Diesel-powered passenger service through Abrams yard was either by ex-RDG RDC's or FP-7A push-pull trains.

Here, ex-RDG FP-7A 900 (CR 4371), repainted in SEPTA colors, blasts through Abrams yard with five coaches on a late August day in 1978. The push-pull train has ex-RDG FP-7A 903 (CR 4373) on the rear.

CR 4372 King of Prussia, PA 6-8-1979

Former RDG FP-7A 902 (CR 4372), repainted in SEPTA colors, leads a five coach push-pull through Abrams in June, 1979.

CR 4373 King of Prussia, PA 5-25-1979

Ex-RDG FP-7A 903 (CR 4373), repainted in SEPTA colors, brings up the rear of a five coach push-pull on a May day in 1979.

The push-pull train was led by ex-RDG FP-7A 900 (CR 4371).

CR 6573 Macedonia, OH 03-6-1978

I'm in the cab of Conrail F7A 1733 heading down the switching lead as a set of power goes east on the house lead. Former EL U33C 6573 heads up a good mix of early Conrail power that includes F's, geeps, and a BAR GP-38.

CR F7A Collinwood, OH 2-11-1977

"Hanger queen" is probably the best way to describe this Penn Central F7A out behind the P1A shop at Collinwood. No number was visible, and as you can see it was being parted out with one of the windows missing. It's ran it's last mile. Another former NYC unit, U25B 2501, is in the background, and I'm sure it will be fixed and put back to work.

PC 1639, 1772, 1733 Toledo, OH 6/6/76

A trio of F7A's - PC 1639, 1772, 1733 - are on the point of a train at Toledo, OH on 6/6/76.
