Conrail inherited its E unit fleet from the Penn Central and Erie Lackawanna. While the EL used its E's in midwestern freight service, Conrail quickly discontinued this practice and reduced it's E unit usage to commuter service in the east and executive service on the Office Car Special.

CR 4327 South Amboy, NJ 7-10-1981

CR-operated NY&LB passenger operations are in full swing as a trio of E-8A's, led by NJDOT 4327 (ex-ICG 4023, rebuilt in 7/1978), pull a string of coaches through South Amboy in July, 1981.

CR 4328 Elizabethport, NJ 4-4-1983

After ending almost 30 years of passenger operation by NYC, PC and CR, NJDOT-lettered E-8A 4328 sits in a line of retired E-units at Elizabethport, NJ in April, 1983.

Formerly NYC E-8A 4085, this unit has been preserved at the New York Central Museum in Elkhart, Indiana.

CR-operated NJDOT E-8A 4328 (ex-PC) sits in a line of E-units at South Amboy in March, 1978.  Built in 8/53, the E-8A would operate over the NY&LB almost 3 more years by CR, followed by 2 with NJ Transit, before being retired at Elizabethport in 4/1983.

Formerly NYC 4085, this unit has been preserved at the New York Central Museum in Elkhart, Indiana.

Feels like home again pulling the Southern Crescent for two ex-SR E-8A's except that they are no longer south of the Mason Dixon line, but are in New Jersey!

Now with CR operations for NJDOT, E-8A's 4330 (ex-SR 6914) and 4331 (ex-SR 6907) pull nine cars near South Amboy in June, 1980.

After ex-SR CEO Stanley Crane removed passenger operations from the Southern Railway in 1978, the former Southern Crescent-assigned E-8A's now pull for CR's contract passenger operations in New Jersey. 

With NJDOT numbers 4330 and 4331 and worn paint, the former pride of the Southern pull nine cars near South Amboy in June, 1980.

Following years of service for the Southern Railway, the E-8A's would operate n NJ from 1980 until their retirment in 1982 as part of CR's NJDOT contract passenger operations.

After removing the cash-draining passenger operations as Southern Railway's CEO in 1978, Stanley Crane oversaw both the retirement of the former pride of the Southern's E-8A's in 1982, and the eventual ending of CR passenger operations on NJDOT in 1983.

The pride of the Southern Railway's Southern Crescent has come to rest at Elizabethport, NJ for retirement in April, 1983. Ex-SR E-8A 6904, with NJ Transit number 4332, joined CR's contracted ex-PC E-8A fleet in 1980.

Although not officially ever on the CR roster, this old NYC unit was buried in the dead lines at Altoona.

NYC E-7B 4107 was being taken to scrap along with two ex-PRR E-7A's at Willow Grove, PA in December, 1976. The E-7A's and the E-7B were not on the April, 1976 Conrail roster. The low quality photo was taken by a Kodak Brownie camera and Ektachrome film.

PC 4200-4245 Willow Grove, PA 12-11-1976

An unidentified ex-PRR E-7A(4200-4245 series) was on it's way, along with ex-PRR E-7A 4243 and NYC E-7B 4107, to scrap at Willow Grove, PA in December, 1976. The crude lettering shows the E-7A's destination as "Morrisville Scrap Co., Morrisville, PA. The E-7A's and E-7B were not on the April, 1976 roster. The low quality photo was taken with a Kodak Brownie camera and Ektachrome film.
