Foreign Power on Conrail - Page 7

Occasionally, power from other roads would venture on CR's rails. Run-through power from western roads could be seen on interchange trains at Yards like Elkhart and Avon, while power from CSX and NS could be found on interchange trains to and from Selkirk and Allentown.

D&H trackage rights

Between the bankruptcy of the D&H proclaimed by Guilford in 1988 and its purchase by Canadian Pacific in 1991 the New York, Susquehanna and Western was designated to operate the property. As part of the formation of Conrail in 1976 two concessions were made to the D&H. They got to pick up some of the best locomotives of the Lehigh Valley Railroad and they got trackage rights along the Southern Tier between Binghamton and Buffalo. In early 1991 a brace of Susquehanna B40-8 locomotives (financed by CSX), led by 4006 penetrates the fog along the Susquehanna River as a westbound D&H freight utilizes those trackage rights west of Binhamton.

D&H locomotives and trains mixed in with Conrail operations were a common site at Allentown yard from early 1977 through the summer of 1978.

This former Erie, C378 class N7E caboose, numbered as D&H 35815, was hooked up to a mixed freight on July 16, 1978. Were it not for the D&H stencil, this scene would have been common in many EL yards just a few years before.

The D&H traded their 4075 and 4082 for B&M 1508 and 1536. Note the larger-than-normal number boards which were a feature on some of the B&M RS-3's. The 1508 has large "bug-eye" number boards, making it even easier to spot and is presently preserved at the Railroad Museum of New England in Thomaston, CT.
